Every single scene, Indy fails to get what he wants. The Ark? Lost to some warehouse. Sankara Stones and the Grail? Slip through his fingers. Everyone he fights kicks the crap out of him. Every plan backfires. Can’t he get anything right?

Vin Diesel and Steven Seagal don’t have this problem. They’re contractually obligated to win every scene, because that’s what heroes are supposed to do, right? Win?

Maybe not. Maybe we connect to Indy because deep inside, we know real heroes are brave enough to fail, endure ridicule, and take a kick to the face, time and time again, yet they keep fighting. They don’t give up.
